The legend goes on since 1981

“Concerto” was born in 1981, as an effect of a viticulture with an unexpressed potential, experimenting new training systems and new blends, including also non-autochthonous varietals; it was one of the forerunners and also one of the top 10 players of the “Super Tuscans” phenomenon.

Harvest

The year 2021 was distinguished by a cold winter with little precipitation. An (initially) cool spring with adequate rainfall was followed by a long, hot summer but with good diurnal temperature variations that allowed excellent completion of the grape ripening process. Worthy of note, an initial delayed development of the vines that resolved itself as the season progressed.

The harvest was extremely rewarding, in terms of performance and excellent quality and health of the grapes going to cellar; these grapes will yield rich, well-structured wines thanks to their thick, but well-balanced, fresh skins.

There was a slight decrease in quantity, due to the insufficient rain during the winter which hindered budding in the early-maturing areas.

Beginning of the harvest: September 9th, 2021

End of the harvest: October 13th, 2021

Rainfalls (sum of rainfall between April 1st and September 30th): 503,1 mm

Temperature Index (sum of average daily temperatures from April 1st to September 30th): 4.511,3 °C

Evaluation: Very good

The vineyard

Vineayard Scassi & Brotine

A few Tuscan winemakers' determination to pursue new paths without betraying their close ties with their region and its history, made it almost inevitable that Supertuscans would succesfully face and win their wager. Concerto, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a pefect example of this.
Its unique character lies in the fact that its Cabernet Sauvignon is not just the "standard" varietal; the close bond that it has forged with its adopted terroir, Fonterutoli in the Chianti Classico region, has allowed it to develop a lofty and inimitable character of its own.

The Sangiovese comes from one fo the best vineyard in the lower part of Fonterutoli terroir called "Scassi", positioned at around 350 m a.s.l. which benefits from perfect exposure and a rocky soil; with a good presence of chalk and very rich in background. Here the mass selection of Sangiovese from an experimental vineyard have been grown in the 1930s have been planted and developed a unique personality.
The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a small vineyard called "Brotine" situated at 340 m a.s.l. and surrounded by an oak forest. This particular vineyard was chosen on account of its unique micro-climate and of its soil consisting of calcareous rock, considered particularly suitable to maximise this varietl's potential.

One of the first Supertuscans ever produced

Concerto di Fonterutoli, which first saw the light of day in 1981, is one of the first ten wines that spawned the legend of the Supertuscans in a decade which marked a historic turnabout in Tuscan winemaking. Thanks to the enlightened contribution of this mere handful of wines, all of them striclty from the Chianti region save one, the term "Supertuscan" rapidaly gained a reputation in the world as a category on its own, suddenly finding itself up to competing with areas of such unquestioned pedigree as Bordeaux, and adding new lustre to the image of Italian wine in general.

The taste of a legend

Concerto's first vintage was an outright experiment resulting in only fifteen barriques - the very first barriques ever to be used at Fonterutoli - jealously guarded in our historic cellars for eighteen months. At the first tasting after all those months, the combination of the two varietals proved to be so perfectly balanced that they immediately brought to mind a symphony. In fact Marchesa Carla Mazzei was instantly prompted to christen the wine Concerto, a name that perfectly captures the harmony achieved between the two cépages and the faultless symphony in the complex notes of flavour that characterise the wine.
